Together Everyone Achieves More

The yard is buzzing at the moment, horses are running well and we are all busy welcoming new arrivals to the team along with cleaning / tidying ready for the NH season ahead.

We have had some pleasing results over the last week , SEARANGER followed up his recent course and distance win at Catterick, taking the seller in great style under PJ McDonald for owners ICM Racing and John Dance. He was declared to run again on Wednesday but unfortunately heavy showers put an end to our plan. He holds an entry at Redcar (a track he likes) next week , so I’m hoping for dry weather for him.

DESERT WAY was also an impressive winner at Doncaster during the week for new syndicate TITANIUM RACING , it was their first ever winner so it was very special to be involved. DESERT WAY is quite a highly strung filly and Gemma Docherty has done a great job with her at home getting her more settled. She travelled nicely through the race and PJ Mcdonald gave her a great ride, as it stands he has had 62 winners already this season & is definitely on track for his best season yet.

My Deauville trip was interesting and it was great to meet up with our French Agent GUY PETIT again . We had a long shortlist (!) of horses to look at and having narrowed our list down to four, all went through the ring above our budget. They were lovely horses and should make into exciting Saturday horses for new connections. Unfortunately I could only manage to return home with a croissant and some rather nice Cotes De Provence , however I learned plenty and hopefully I’ll be back next year with some more Euros !!!

Luckily the two horses I wanted to buy from Tattersalls Newmarket were both in budget and we came home with two smashing young prospects to go jumping with. The first, a three year old son of Nathaniel ( ALL HAIL CAESAR ) is a proper chasing type and one I’m really excited about. He is cantering on the gallop at home now and shows a great attitude. The second purchase is five year old GENRES, a Champs Elysees gelding who has been bought to go novice hurdling this season, with chasing in mind down the line. He stands a good 16.3hh and is a great model. He is probably well handicapped on the flat too, he was a recent winner this year in Hamilton and has also won on the AW at Newcastle. GENRES is FOR SALE to stay in the yard and will make a cracking dual purpose horse for someone, he is fit and ready to go now £15000 + Sales &Livery costs.

We have a number of new horses who have joined the team , MISS GOLDSMITH for West Coast Racing should make her debut for the yard this week, either at Wolverhampton or Redcar. CHATEAUX CHINON (who is half brother to ASUNCION) and ROYAL MANDATE have been sent by Mike and Eileen Newbould and both look smart sorts for jumping. The majority of the jumpers are back in trotting, new names include PORTO DU SUD, ELZAWAY (daughter of ELZAHANN who some of you will remember) , VALZAN ( smart French hurdler chaser for John & Mary Thackray ), DULCE PANEM (who is for sale 50%) , A Malinas 4 yo Gelding, CLEOFE (3yo Shirocco Filly who is half sister to Lieutenant Colonel). LADY VOLANTE, SEXY LEGS and ANNES VALENTINO look three nice fillies for the flat and John Wades horses are now back trotting.

Great to have HALCYON DAYS (6 – time chase winner last season) back in along with NORTONTHORPE LEGEND, MOSCANISI , ROYAL MACNAB , CALYPSO STORM, CAPTAIN MOWBRAY and TOMKEVI. Although I haven’t mentioned them all now, I will be uploading new photos and information of all our horses in training over the coming days / weeks. For those who are on twitter, keep checking my page for live gallop videos in the mornings.

Lots more going on in the yard, the middle barn has been steam cleaned and disinfected and the Equine Spa has had a polish and looks as good as new. Our fogging machine has been busy filling the air with Steri – 7 to kill any lurking bugs or bacteria which may be hiding in the barns / roofs. The place looks amazing and feels so clean and we are now more than ready for anything winter is going to throw at us ! Plans have gone in for a new gallop which is very different to the one we have – it will be a huge addition to use alongside our existing facilities and should hopefully be installed before the Autumn.

We have recently welcomed Bradley to the team, he has heaps of experience and is a good rider. Anna Dawson is back from her summer break and is riding out three mornings a week and it has been great having Jamie Hamilton in to ride out too. We are currently interviewing more staff to join the team here and I’m looking forward to welcoming our first Northern Racing College graduate, Katie, who is starting a placement with us next week.

This week is very busy again in terms of runners, VON BLUCHER runs in a competitive handicap at York on Saturday – he was a very pleasing 6th in the Bunbury Cup two weeks ago so I’m hoping a similar performance should see him go close. PRAIRIE IMPULSE needs a bit of time between her runs but she seems back to best now and will run in Uttoxeter on Sunday. Next week we have entries in Wolverhampton, Ayr , Yarmouth (!) , Beverley , Thirsk, Pontefract, Perth and Redcar !

Final plans are now being put in place for the Owners’ Day which is being held in aid of the Air Ambulance this year. If you would like some more information on the day, or perhaps are interested in becoming involved in the yard please do drop me an email (rebeccaelizabeth.menzies@hotmail.co.uk) or give me a call 07843169217.

Hope your all summering well, look forward to welcoming everyone to Howe Hills soon !
